Outdoor/active events are few and far between during the dark, wet days of winter, but as spring swiftly approaches they start to pop up every weekend. Now seems like a better time than ever to register, buy tickets and/or make notes in your calendar for the best events NorCal has to offer. Also, if you're going to be taking part in runs, races and rides, you ought to start training.
So, here's a list of six local, active events happening in the next couple months:

The Sundial Film Festival
When: Weekend of March 5th
Where: Cascade Theatre, downtown Redding

Organized and presented by the Active 20-30 Club of Redding Foundation, The Sundial Film Festival, in its 8th year, showcases the talent and diversity of filmmakers and photographers at the beautifully restored Cascade Theater in Redding, California.

Shasta Trail Runs 4MPH Challenge
When: March 19th
Where: Whiskeytown National Recreation Area - Oak Bottom

Can you manage a 15 minute per mile pace on relatively benign trails? Of course you can! Most of you could do sub-10min/mile, many could do TWO miles in 15 minutes.

Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour - Redding
When: April 9th
Where: Cascade Theatre

Our favorite film festival is returning to Redding's historic Cascade Theatre Saturday, April 9th. We've attended the event the last two years, and it has to be one of the coolest events in NorCal year round. Even if you're not particularly interested in adventure sports or the outdoors, Banff is still be fun. That's due to the great variety of films shone. Simpson University 1st Annual Red Hawk Ride
When: April 9th
Where: Simpson University - Redding

Designed for riders of all ages and skill levels, the Red Hawk Ride includes routes of 6, 18, 38 and 64 miles that start and finish on campus at 2211 College View Drive. Breakfast and lunch are available for purchase; the event will also feature vendors and live music.

Lemurian Shasta Classic MTB Race
When: April 30th
Where: Whiskeytown National Recreation Area

Founded in 1987, the Lemurian Shasta Classic Mountain Bike Race is renowned for its epic loop, huge climbs and long, technical descents. We attempt to create an extremely challenging and difficult Long course, a more modest Intermediate course, and an easier, but techinical short course. In keeping with our “grass roots” mindset, we offer cash prizes and medals in the Long Course Categories, and medals to the winners of other categories. Since all riders support the race equally via their entry fee, we give away a large amount of “schwag” in the most generous post-race raffle around. It’s nigh time to get muddy. NorCal’s muckiest 5K and 10K, the Shasta Mud Run hosted by non profit Youth Violence Prevention Council (YVPC), returns for its fourth rendition Saturday, May 14th.
